How To Change your Monstie’s Element In Monster Hunter Stories
Note:: You must have Rite of Channeling unlocked for this.
While elemental changes can be made early in the game, it’s also much easier once you’re later in the game and have access to better genes.
Monsters start expressing elemental effects at +4 elemental attack, nothing else matters. We’ll start with the humble Aptonoth first.
0 elemental bias and 0 elemental attack across the board makes Aptonoth a good testing ground for changing elements.
Unlike the other game, Monster Hunter Stories 1 doesn’t allow you to move genes around, so we have to find other monsters with genes that fit into the grid open for this Aptonoth.
This Red Khezu has a Thunder Attack+2 gene that fits nicely in the open slot.
And likewise our Aptonoth has +2 Thunder Attack.
However, it is still not enough to completely change its element.
I had another gen that would fit in the top slot that also has Thunder Attack +2, which moves us to a +4 target. One ceremony later and…
Our Aptonoth is now a Yellow Thunder Girl! This changes her basic attacks and her kin skills to thunder elemental.
Element changes for already elemental monsters
This segment is a bit smaller, but it is possible to change the element of monsters that are already elemental.
However, it takes a lot more effort, especially if you’re changing the monsters to an element they’re normally weak to.
You must overcome the original element which will be +4 or more. This means the minimum you’ll need is +5 in the new element, but this can vary by monster.
As you can see in the example below, this Lagombi is full of fire genes, but does not express fire element because its ice element attack is still higher. Lagombi starts with a negative fire attack, so we’ll need to load higher levels of +Fire elemental attack to meet the +5 requirement.
But it’s not impossible, even at the beginning of the game. Here is my Thunder Rathian as an example. All of her genes are +2 to thunder attack which eventually overpowered her innate fire element.
It may take a little extra work, but it’s worth it!
