Lorelei and the Laser Eyes Ending Guide – Please note that I have labeled the sections of this guide by year and that there will be spoilers… of course.

Lorelei and the Laser Eyes Ending Guide (SPOILERS)

In some basic context, we play as a young Lorelei Weiss, wandering through a surreal hotel inhabited by Lorelei’s current (old) memories – this can cause some confusion as the game routinely suggests that the hotel is from 1963, while it is filled with 2014 documents (such as medical Lorelei records).

Fortunately, the setup is made clear by the game’s ending sequence.

1847

Although Lorenzo and Renate are physically present throughout the game, the following is crucial: they are actually fictional characters from Nero Renzo’s story The Third Eye, set in 1847.

In the story (which can be put together using the script pages found in room 1963 ), Renate undergoes a disturbing transformation that is very similar to Renzo’s in the final cutscene of the game.

Panicked, Lorenzo retreats before pushing Renate out of an upstairs window, killing her.

1963

With that in mind, let’s cover what actually happened.

Remember that Lorelei is not Renate and Renzo is not Lorenzo.

Although of course these characters have striking parallels.

Renzo’s biography states that he goes to an art show and calls Lorelei “a woman with laser eyes”, eventually commissioning her to create a piece of art for him.

However, after working on said project at the hotel for some time, Lorelei becomes horrified by his behavior – something we see throughout the game’s flashbacks and script pages, though it is mentioned in Robert Sidney’s 1962 warning letter.

Fearing for her life, Lorelei pushes Renzo out of one of the upper windows of the hotel and kills him.

2014

Due to the trauma of the killing, Lorelei can’t move on from her life and keeps reliving the event over and over again – making her a young and old protagonist at the same time.

Her entire life is reduced to a single mistake and she withdraws not only from the public eye, but from the entire art world.

In fact, one of the newspaper articles about her mysterious career mentions that she became popular more for her participation in the tragedy than for her art (although the related police records are full of redacted and vague information).

Additionally, in the basement prison cell, Renzo claims that Lorelei has been incarcerated for 51 years – exactly between 1963 (when the incident occurred) and 2014 (the current year).

On a side note, Lorelei and Renzo were not lovers, despite Renzo’s flirtatious nature. In fact, during the dance scene after solving the piano puzzle, Renzo says something along the lines of, “Can’t a dog chase other dogs while dancing with a cat? With that in mind, it can be assumed that Renzo is gay and sees his relationship with Lorelei as a muse – although since they were both artists, this is also somewhat ambiguous.

Lorelei’s entire existence revolves around three monumental years in her life: 1847 and 1963, in which Renzo’s ironic defenestration is implicated, and 2014, the current and final year of her life (with eyes closed by Renzo’s ghost just as the credits roll).

Of course, this isn’t an in-depth analysis – it’s a personal interpretation – but hopefully it should answer any questions about the endgame. It certainly helped me put my thoughts together!
